This document was written by Philip Brohan (Met Office). He was funded by the Joint DECC and Defra Integrated Climate Programme, DECC/Defra (GA01101).
Whaling and Royal Navy Arctic expedition observations in the early nineteenth century were produced as part of the Colonial Registers and Royal Navy Logbooks project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
The Franklin observations were provided by John Buchanan.
The First Fleet observations were provided by Joelle Gergis (U. Melbourne) and Nicholas Brown.
Observations from the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition were rescued and provided by Chris Turney (UNSW).
Most of the other expedition records were found and selected by Rob Allan (Met Office).
Most of the transcriptions, from original record (document image) to spreadsheets, were done by Gail Kelly.
Some of the transcription was funded by Jürg Luterbacher at the University of Giessen.
This is part of a larger program of work on historical climate data coordinated by the International ACRE Program.
These observations form part of the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere DataSet (ICOADS).
